Server 2012 Hyper-V Network Layout Advice
i building 5 node hyper-v cluster , looking advice on network layout.. no iscsi using 8gb fc san.
each host have 2 physical quad port nics in addition 2 on-board\embedded. here thinking:
4 x 1gb vm ports(teamed using 2 ports on quad port card 1 , 2 port on quad port card 2.. several trunked vlans)
2 x 1gb management ports (teamed on 2 on-board\embedded.. vlan1)
2 x 1gb live migration ports (teamed via one port on quad port card 1 , 1 port on quad port card 2.. vlan2)
1 x 1gb csv port (third port on quad port card 1.. vlan3)
1 x 1gb cluster heartbeat port (fourth port on quad port card 2.. vlan4)
the teams have physical connection split between 2 cisco switches on etherchannel. thoughts?
hi,
a standard, recommended network configuration hyper-v cluster each host has 4 network adapters 1 gbps:
- 1 nic virtual machine access
- 1 nic management
- 1 nic csv storage
- 1 nic live migration
since have more nics, can use nic redundancy prevent single point failure in above configuration.
your plan looks good. don’t understand port csv, mentioned use fc san, did mean csv port?
some advices are:
if possible, give more bandwidth virtual machine access , live migration
there no dedicated heartbeat windows server 2008 cluster; can select “allow cluster network communication on network” option allow cluster nodes communication on nic. can include communication such heartbeats health-checking, updates cluster database, join requests partitioned nodes, , more. can set management ports heartbeat, since management ports plan 2 nics teaming, think it’s enough heartbeat. can add heartbeat port live migration.
use switch redundancy prevent single point failure.
