Resizing Partition
dear all,
i using windows server 2008 r2 , hosting ad on server. has following hdd layout
bay 1 -4 : 36 gb
logical disk 1: bay 1 , 2, raid 0: system partiton
logical disk 2: bay 3 , 4: raid 0: system reserved + unallocated space
my logical disk has 1 gb left , want use unallocated space on logical disk 2 extending partition out losing data , considerable server downtime.
would possible, highly appreciated
hello,
i did try scenario in lab , won't work:
1- can convert system disk dynamic volume (but have first remove pagefile.sys volume, , have @ least 1mo free @ end of disk, can skrinking partition) => ok
2- convert second disk dynamic volume => ok
3- when want extend system disk greyed out, cannot proceed. why ? looks cannot specified @ end of kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325590 :
- note can extend boot partition in contiguous unallocated disk space.
and when invoke wizard extend volume on system volume (which is on dynamic disk as done in 1-) (and assuming have empty space, did shrinking again volume) specifies :
- can extend volume available space shown below because disk cannot converted dynamic or volume being extended boot or system volume
so cannot using windows tools. , not recommand use third party software.
to return @ first problem, no more space on c: volume. raid configuration ? sure in raid 0 ? odd (no redundancy), should in raid 1.
if in raid 1 configuration, 1 easy way resize volume is :
- remove 1 of disk (bay 1 example)
- replace bigger one
- wait rebuild complete in raid manager interface.
- when rebuild complete, change second disk (bay 2) bigger disk of same capacity other added.
- wait rebuild complete again.
- when rebuild complete, extend raid volume via raid manager interface.
- extend volume in windows while keeping disk basic (no use put in dynamic in case)
normally can of without rebooting server.
hope helps.
regards
julien
