Applying Group Policy Shortcuts Policy (Hanging)
background:
use windows xp clients , windows server 2008r2
have been having issue on our network year now. intermittently computers lock @ applying personal settings. computer never finish logging in , has hard rebooted. in addition, once happens typically user not able logon computer until administrative rights first logs in logs off. have on 1500 computers , 2 dozen ou's there no pattern when happens not appear ou specific. in fact there times when user administrative access cannot log onto machine , user administrative access must log on. enabled verbosestatus on machines , found says applying group policy shortcuts policy when locks up. have enabled userenv log , log appears fine. shortcuts policy appears complete computer never makes past. here excerpt userenv log of machine hanging. end of log see appears if policy completing. in addition have verified shortcuts valid , when user able logon shortcuts show , work fine. also, there no errors in event logs. said, have been having problem on year now. have been dealing on front lines helping users lead tech , have been elevated systems administrator address issue first order of business. appreciate help. thank you.

i suggest install cse hotfix rollup windows xp following link check result.

if not work, please disable antivirus program , firewall, perform clean boot on clients check if there third party software conflicts.

enabling group policy preferences debug logging using rsat
collect gpmc log
==============
1. on domain controller, click start -> run, type gpmc.msc, load gpmc console. if gpmc snap-in not installed.
2. right click on "group policy result" , choose wizard generate report problematic computer , user account (please place appropriately). (choose computer , select proper user in wizard)
3. right click resulting group policy result , click "save report…" => save report , upload link provided.
