New 08 Server with New AD????
here's current config...
server1 = windows 2003 dc
server2 = windows 2003 gdc (exchange 2003)
server3 = windows 2003 member
ad = abc.local
approximately 75 user/email accounts
here's want do...
new server
server4 = windows 2008 dc (to replace server1 & server3)
new ad
ad = 123.com
server1 our data , used our main server. if leave our current exchange 2003 server way time being, can both ad's exist , have users access new server & old servers? taking server3 , installing clean copy of windows 2003 exchange 2007 new ad , migrating 2003 info server2. once thats done eliminate ad=abc.local , have ad=123.com.
will work????
there 2 ways make work:
- migrate new domain
this means make server4 domain controller for a new domain named 123.com in new forest. users locate resources on new server can build trust relationship between 123.com , abc.local domains. using admt 3.1 tool (not available yet) can migrate user accounts abc.local domain abc.local domain. in new active directory forest can make new exchange organization , begin scratch exchange server 2007.
this scenario intensive. way when current domain absolutely rubbish, don't have high standards and want start new scratch. have configure lot of stuff on desktops of users , telephone not stop ringing long period. have wait till microsoft releases admt 3.1 tool. if don't want wait can make new useraccounts in new domain manually.
- transition domain
the second way preparing current domain windows server 2008 domain controllers , then implement server4 domain controller abc.local domain. users can start using server right away. after migrated data can rid of server1 , server3. can reuse server3 exchange server preparing active directory , exchange organization exchange server 2007 , place server3 second exchange server. after moving mailboxes, routing connectors, owa urls , other stuff server2 new server3 can rid of server2. when you're done can rename domain abc.local 123.com
this scenario not require configure on desktops of users. when move mailboxes , rename domain after working hours your colleagues might not suspect thing! the downside need know you're doing, because things can go wrong pretty fast. scenario can performed tools available.
i recommend taking @ both scenarios , picking scenario best fits needs.
