Group Policy setting for offline folders.

hi all,

i'm having myself reacquantied offline files after swearing oath stay away them when mixed folder redirections around xp launch timeframe. suffice i've had no real dramas working offline files in own right, i'm having problems working them via group policy settings.

in essence, need redirect documents documents folder located within unc mapped home drive. can represented as:

as assumed unc, dfs namespace.

so far, i'm @ point documents correctly made available offline - being second bullet point covered. however, can't seem achieve resolving requirement first bullet point made permanently offline. i'm using following 2 group policy settings:

  • computer configuration/policies/administrative templates/network/offline files: administratively assigned offline files = enabled;
  • computer configuration/policies/administrative templates/network/offline files: subfolders available offline = enabled.

now, i'm not concerned second group policy setting @ point in time, because things falling down first setting:

  • the policy setting requires unc. okay, no problem, except client not appear honour %username% variable;
  • using h:\ reference doesn't work, dare it, obvious reasons (as in, seems case design).

so, has else experience in administratively assigned offline files got advice how resolve dilemma? because far can see, i'm @ impasse.

as footnote, i'm using computer-based offline file settings, understand both computer , user sections merged implementation anyway, , these settings apply laptops, not desktops. logic therefore applies asset, not user (given can roam between machines, including using on-loan laptops).

cheers,
lain

hi wilson,

indeed, changes offline folders in windosw 7 welcome - better trouble caused in xp timeframe. didn't have trouble making documents available offline, part easy indeed.

the problem have can't make h: available offline. illustrate problem better, example of folder structure:

_ \\server\dfs\directory
|
|__ \\server\dfs\directory\username (h:)
|
|____ \\server\dfs\directory\username\my documents

the bottom-most directory folder redirection points to. location made available offline default.

what seem unable make directory above (the h:) available offline. can't using unc because offline folders client doesn't appear capable of using %username% variable. because of this, other choice have use h:\ syntax, except doesn't seem supported either.

so, in short, folder redirection works fine because supports %username%. offline folders not seem working because not appear support %username% part of path. that's hoping feedback on users here experience 2 listed policy settings.

at point, i'll accept cannot administratively assign user's unc home drive reference , stick working default offline availability of documents redirection. it's not solution wanted, feeling it's going have do.

cheers,
lain
