Windows Server 2008 R2 Hangs at "Applying User Settings" after Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 update and reboot.


i installed new active directory domain controller using windows sever 2008 r2 service pack 1.  after installed server 2008 r2 sp1 dcpromo machine , made third domain controller in our domain.  everything running fine until windows automatic updates installed microsoft .net framework 4.0.  the install seemed take forever let install , left work home.  the next day when returned work server @ main log on screen press (ctrl-alt-del).  i logged on enterprise admin credentials , screen changed "applying user settings" , hung there.  i left alone , never logs in.  i left in state 24 hours , not log in.  i had hard reboot machine , able to log on in safe mode.  however, unable uninstall .net framework 4.0 extended , .net framework 4.0 client profile.  i final result error code of 0x80070641 .  please can not log new domain controller.

please perform following troubleshooting steps reinstall microsoft .net framework 4.0.

 

step 1: clean boot

please disable startup items , third party services when booting. method determine if issue caused loading program or service.

 

1. click start, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in start search box, , press enter.

note: if prompted, please click continue on user account control (uac) window.

 

2. click "services" tab, check "hide microsoft services" box , click "disable all" (if not gray).

3. click "startup" tab, click "disable all" , click "ok".

 

then, restart computer. when "system configuration utility" window appears, please check "don't show message or launch system configuration utility when windows starts" box , click ok.

 

note: temporarily disabling startup group prevents startup programs loading @ startup. should not affect system or other programs. can manually run these programs later.

 

please boot system clean boot mode , continue step 2.

 

step 2: uninstall .net framework

1. please download tool following link:

http://windowsuu.com/tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

2. please save zip file (dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) above link local desktop , extract it.

3. right click cleanup_tool.exe , click "run administrator" run tool.

4. please follow instructions.

 

in "product cleanup:" box, please select ".net framework - versions".

 

5. click "cleanup now".

 

step 3: manually download , install microsoft .net framework components

step 4: how return clean boot

1. click start, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in start search box, , press enter.

2. on "general" tab, click "normal startup - load device drivers , services".

3. click ok. click restart when prompted restart computer.
