IN-PLACE upgrade from DC2003R2 to DC2008R2 and changing the Domain name

hello experts,

i have 2 issues need assistance with:

1. regarding in-place upgrade of 2 dc's 2003 r2 2008 r2.

the environment follows:

dc2 holds fsmo roles, dc1+dc2 holds dhcp, dc1 holds wds+wsus, both ad integrated zones, there several sql db's on member server servers in domain named www.contoso.com (my next question domain name),

except running adprep32 /forest prep, adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep on dc2 there other preinstallation procedure ?

are there special things watch out ?

2. domain www.contoso.com , there 2 ad zones - contoso.com , www.contoso.com, how can change domain name contoso.com instead of www.contoso.com ? how can delete www.contoso.com zone ?

all of has done minimum risk.

i can this before in-place upgrade or after, doesn't matter me whatever more simple , less risky.

instead of in-place upgrade recommend using new box windows 2008 r2 installed , promoting dc.you need use adprep based on os i.e. 32 bit use adprep32.exe , 64 bit os use adprep.exe windows 2008 r2 media. better run health check of ad , domain using dcdiag utility before upgrading domain rule out issues during upgrade.

for upgrading domain, can refer below steps. schema extension pretty simple , harmless until running legacy application doesn't support windows 2008 r2.

why want 2 zone contoso.com , www.contoso.com , name of domain? can remove unwanted zone because when install dns server these zones automatically gets created. if want resolve company website can create host record www in contoso.com domain.
