Cannot identify which host a certain VM is connected to.

i have 1 server running windows 2012 standard (not r2).

this server 1 not have reg keys filled in here:

hklm\software\microsoft\virtual machine\guest\parameters

is there way of identifying host machine connected to? or there way of repairing through installation or update? (boss prefers not input keys hand reason)

(for clarity sake - know server connected process of elimination, i'd avoid problem in past , find way skin cat)

i checked - functionality has been there since dawn of time (tm).  technically, first implemented in virtual pc 2004.  should working *unless* services brian mention aren't running - first thing check.
