80246002 error after installing Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320

this problem prevents windows update being able search, download, , install updates.

i experiencing issue on machines running server 2008 r2 , windows 7 enterprise (i imagine issue windows update , not os affecting other os' well).

this problem becoming widespread quickly.

the proposed fix (method 1) in article below did not resolve problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958056/en-us

note: method 2 not viable when applying more 1 update @ time when updating multiple machines.

several others posting similar problems:

this preventing scheduled server maintenance being performed.

could targeted attack? happening @ end of week before long holiday weekend not leaving me feeling...

i hope fixing issue high priority.

btw - there is no "windows update issue" forum category find - if there is, sorry posting in wrong area.

cheers,

jeff

my fix worked...

reviewed operational log windowsupdateclient (buried in event viewer here:

application , services logs -> microsoft -> windows -> windowsupdateclient -> operational

after review, noticed event 30 "windows updates established connectivity" no longer occurring , event 42 "there has been change in health of windows update" thing after error (event 25 "windows update failed check updates error 0x80246002")

even though machine restarted after applying "windows update agent 7.6.7600.320" patch , had tried restarting windows update service, service appears hung.

solution:

1.) restart windows update service

2.) monitor operational log windowsupdateclient (refreshing every 5-10 seconds)

3.) verify that event 30 happens (you should see event 38 after restarting service followed (2) event 42, event 30)

4.) once event 30 happens go windows update gui , run "check updates" - yay!

5.) can go operational log , see event 26 "windows update found x updates" followed event 40 each update found.

what strange checked first machine experienced problem , magically fixed itself.

it seems may have been caused ddos attack on source windows updates windows update service connects to. or the source location was having maintenance performed.

regardless, in case, not problem the os or patch inability windows update service establish connectivity.

hope helps :)

cheers,

jeff
